Difference Between a Contact and Deals

In HubSpot, contacts and deals are two different record types. They are closely connected, but they serve different purposes.

πŸ‘€ Contact - People (buyers)

A contact represents an individual you are working with.

Examples of contacts include:

β€’ Buyer
β€’ Co buyer
β€’ Realtor
β€’ Other person involved in the home purchase process

Contact records store information about the person, such as their name, email address, phone number, and communication history.

πŸ‘‰ Think: β€œWho has shown an interest in our company or product??”

πŸ’Ό  Opportunities (Deals) - Home Purchase Opportunity

A deal represents a specific home purchase opportunity.

Deals are the primary workspace for the sales team. Each deal should represent one home purchase opportunity by community.

Deal records store key sales information, such as:

β€’ Deal amount or home price
β€’ Close date
β€’ Pipeline stage
β€’ Deal owner or sales rep
β€’ Community
β€’ Current status of the opportunity

πŸ’¬ Sales Activity Standard (Required)
All sales activity related to a home purchase opportunity must be logged on, or associated with, the deal.

The deal is the single source of truth for each home opportunity.

This includes:

β€’ Notes from calls and conversations
β€’ Tour feedback
β€’ Follow ups and next steps
β€’ Emails related to the home purchase
β€’ Internal comments and updates

This helps the sales team see the full history of the opportunity in one place.

πŸ‘‰ Think: β€œWhat home opportunity are we working on, and where is it in the sales process?

πŸ”— How Contacts and Deals Work Together

Contacts and deals are linked (associated) to give full visibility into each opportunity.

A single deal can have multiple contacts (e.g., buyer and co-buyer)

A single contact can be associated with multiple deals (e.g., a buyer who considered multiple communities)
